Lionel Messi showcased his scoring prowess once more, propelling Inter Miami into the Leagues Cup semifinals with an emphatic 4-0 triumph over Charlotte FC on Friday. Messi’s tally now stands at an impressive eight goals since his arrival at Inter Miami.

Continuing his impressive scoring streak with Inter Miami, Lionel Messi secured his eighth goal during a recent Leagues Cup quarterfinal clash against Charlotte FC.

The match unfolded at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, culminating in a commanding 4-0 victory in favor of Inter Miami. Despite carrying the weight of being one of the globe’s most celebrated players, Messi had a relatively subdued evening, finding the net just once in the latter stages of the game, courtesy of a pinpoint cross from Leonardo Campana.

Nevertheless, Messi’s presence on the pitch was pivotal in forcing an own goal in the second half, effectively sealing Charlotte FC’s fate. Inter Miami, previously languishing at the bottom of the Eastern Conference in Major League Soccer, has undergone a remarkable transformation since Messi’s arrival.

The team has amassed a record of four wins and one draw since Messi’s debut in the opening match of the tournament. This impressive run has propelled them to the Leagues Cup semifinals, a prestigious competition featuring all 47 teams from both MLS and Mexico’s Liga MX.

Should Inter Miami secure a victory in either the semifinals or the third-place match, they will earn qualification for next year’s CONCACAF Champions Cup. This would mark the club’s inaugural participation in a continental competition.

In contrast, Charlotte FC struggled to make an impact throughout the encounter, failing to muster a single shot on target in the first half and concluding the match with a meager total of three attempts. Their performance mirrored their lackluster showing during the regular season, where they conceded a league-worst tally of 40 goals.

Messi’s influence on Inter Miami transcends his eight goals; he has also contributed three assists, playing a pivotal role in the team’s dominant 17-6 goal difference against opponents in the tournament. Teammates Josef Martinez and Robert Taylor also played crucial parts in securing the victory against Charlotte FC, notching goals in the 12th and 32nd minutes, respectively. Despite holding a three-goal advantage, Inter Miami’s manager Tata Martino opted to keep Messi on the field during the closing stages of the match. Messi vindicated this decision by slotting home a one-touch finish in the 86th minute.
